Early Victorian Rosewood & Birds Eye Maple Marquetry Writing Slope, c.1840. The LibraryA stunning early Victorian rosewood, bird eye maple and mother of pearl writing slope lap desk. The writing slope boasts exceptional marquetry depicting stylised themes from nature. The box opens to reveal a writing surface covered with later purple baize, and compartments for pens, inkwells and paper. All hinges open and close with ease. A lock mechanism is in place internally, however the key hole has been covered with mother of pearl externally.

The box bears an inscription to the top which reads

most notably a wood shrinkage split to the front panel

the silhouette does have darker black paint evident to the extremities of the head and hair (please see photographs)

free from dents and with clear hallmarks

eldest of the three children of Max Leopold Robert Pettersson (15 April 1914-1995)

The lids show some minor denting consistent with age but remain in a very good condition with function hinge and screw top mechanisms operating with ease
