It is distinguished by a double maturation process: after initial aging in ex bourbon barrels, the spirit is transferred to smaller, 19th century style "quarter casks". This smaller cask size increases the wood to spirit contact by up to 60%, which accelerates maturation and adds layers of creamy sweetness and spice to Laphroaig's signature
