Part 1

And [pray] for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery (mustērion) of the gospel.                                                                                                 EPHESIANS 6:19

The apostle Paul is asking for prayer so that he may boldly speak and make known “the mystery of the gospel”. This was written in the first century. Now, in the twenty-first century, these great truths that Paul was making known then are today still a mystery to almost all of God’s people. This certainly is not the fault of God, for He had it spoken and written for all to know and believe. But, you cannot believe if you are not taught. Very few are teaching the great truths of the mystery of God.

The “mystery” is not something that is mysterious, nor is it incomprehensible. God does not work in “mysterious” ways that are unknown and unclear. His ways may be much higher than man’s ways, but He is clear and concise about Who He is and what He does. The word “mystery” is better understood as “secret”. God kept certain information, or truth, secret until the time He decided to make it known. How was it kept “secret”? God hid it in Himself!

And to make all men see what is the fellowship [oikonomia=administration] of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world [aiōn=age] hath been hid in God.                                                                                  EPHESIANS 3:9

Even the mystery, which hath been hid from [away from] ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.                                                                                                                                     COLOSSIANS 1:26

The information that was “hid in God” is now “made manifest to His saints”! By revelation He made known the hidden truth to Paul and asked Paul to boldly speak it publicly. Paul also recorded the details of the truth in the written record of the Epistles for all to read.

How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery (mustērion); as I wrote afore in few words. Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ [the Christ].                   EPHESIANS 3:3-4

Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began [before times eternal].

But now is made manifest, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of believing.                                                    ROMANS 16:25-26

God had this “secret” information revealed and wants all the tremendous truths involved to be “made known to all nations”. God desires that all men know and understand with believing and obedience!   Now, of course, the big question would be, “What is the great truth that was hid in God?” And then, “Why was it kept secret?”   First, here is one way the mystery, or secret, is described:

And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness.                                                                        I TIMOTHY 3:16A

A secret that is hid in God, and known only by Him, is certainly “the great secret”. The great truth of this secret is concisely declared in one verse, Ephesians 3:6!

Begin in verse 5:

Which [secret] in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel.                                                                                                                                                                      EPHESIANS 3:5-6

Here are the three unparalleled truths stated in verse 6:

  1. Gentiles are fellow heirs.

  2. Gentiles are of the same body.

  3. Gentiles are partakers of God’s promise in Christ by the gospel.

The Greek word translated “Gentiles” is ethnos. Ethnos is a common noun that means nation or people. When plural it refers to all nations in general. Never before was it declared in the Scriptures that people of all nations would be or could be fellow heirs with Christ! And of the same body of Christ! And partakers of God’s promise in Christ! These truths had not ever been said before. Not in the books of the Old Testament nor the four Gospels. Yes, God had said that people of all nations would be blessed in many ways, but never that all could be partakers! fellow-heirs! and of the same body of Christ!

God, in His wisdom, had kept this secret, hidden in Himself. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery [secret], even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world [ages “before the ages”] unto our glory:

Which none of the princes of this world [age] knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the lord of glory.                                                                                                                                                             I CORINTHIANS 2:7-8

Had the “princes of this age” known these great truths “they would not have crucified the lord of glory”.  The Devil and his kingdom of devil spirits would not have worked to accomplish his crucifixion had they known what would happen as a result. They would have preferred to deal with him alone, than have what God wrought in each of us who believe in the resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ. Now we are members of his body. Now we are fellow-heirs with him and partakers of all that God promised in Christ!
