The Word ‘Gospel’ WT 368
Gospel - (NOUN) euangelion: [Bullinger’s Lexicon]
From Homer to Plutarch, ‘the reward for a good message’. Later Greek writers use it in the sense simply of ‘good message’.
As ‘to didaskalion’ [Greek - the teaching, the substance of the teaching] denoted primarily what was taught, and then later, in the plural, the fees paid for instruction, so, reversedly, ‘euangelion’ denoted primarily the reward paid for a good message, and then the good message itself.
The KJV translates euangelion: gospel – 46x
gospel of Christ – 11x
gospel of God – 7x
gospel of the kingdom – 3x
miscellaneous other terms - 10x
ETYMOLOGY [Wikipedia]
"Good News" is the English translation of the Koine Greek euangélion.
The Greek term was Latinized as evangelium in the Vulgate.
In Old English, it was translated as gōdspel.
gōdspel = gōd "good" + spel "news" or “message”
The Old English term gōdspel was retained as ‘gospel’ in Middle English Bible translations and hence remains in use also in Modern English translations.
